In community work, we often focus on programs, projects, and outcomes. Yet one of the most important ingredients for meaningful change is something more fundamental and often very hard to obtain: space. Not just physical space, although that is a precursor, but also spaces intentionally designed for changemaking.
At Jefferson Community Foundation, we see every day how valuable these spaces can be. Through our Nonprofit Resource Center Meeting Room, which can hold up to 30 people, local nonprofits and community groups that serve Jefferson County have access to a free meeting space with good light and accessibility, comfortable furnishings, a large monitor and white board, and excellent internet. These elements are not always available, especially to many of our smaller nonprofits. The availability of this meeting reduces cost barriers to local nonprofits and allows them to use the room for board meetings, strategic planning sessions, hiring committees, collaborative work sessions, advisory and focus groups and even for private and quiet workspace. A wide range of community groups and nonprofits use the meeting room throughout the year for a combined hundreds of hours of free space. Nonprofits can also access the Candid Foundation Directory to research grant opportunities and strengthen their fundraising efforts.
The value of creating space extends beyond a room and a table. JCF also hosts and supports a variety of gatherings that bring nonprofit leaders, public-serving organizations, volunteers, and community changemakers together. These convenings create opportunities to do more than put faces to names; they are opportunities to share challenges, exchange ideas, discover intersecting needs and grow a more effective nonprofit and social services ecosystem.
As organizations across Jefferson County navigate increasingly complex demands with limited resources, these connections are the essential groundwork for stronger relationships that can help our communities respond more effectively to emerging needs, coordinate efforts, reduce duplication, and identify opportunities for lasting change that no single organization could achieve alone.
When people have space to listen, learn, and build trust, new ideas emerge. Partnerships form. Solutions become more nuanced, resilient, and responsive to the realities people are facing. Creating space may not always be the most visible part of community change, but it is often where change begins.
Whether through a board meeting, a strategic planning retreat, a regional coalition, or a workshop, investing in spaces for connection helps strengthen the relationships that make lasting community impact possible.
